Neurofeedback

neurofeedback

Neurofeedback is a form of Biofeedback that we utilize at Autonomic Specialists to help patients with conditions ranging from memory problems/cognitive impairment, insomnia, chronic pain to traumatic brain injuries.

According to the Mayo Clinic, “Biofeedback gives you the power to use your thoughts to control your body, often to improve a health condition or physical performance.” [http://www.mayoclinic.org/tests-procedures/biofeedback/home/ovc-20169724]

Neurofeedback is a specific type of biofeedback that uses brain waves and helps to “re-train” the brain through simple, noninvasive, and pain-free exercises. During Neurofeedback sessions, a specialized computer system monitors the patient’s brain waves, enabling both patient and doctor to see when the brain goes “off track” and allowing the patient to train their brain to get back “on course” and teach it to function more efficiently. Neurofeedback has been most commonly associated with the treatment of patients with ADHD but research has demonstrated a wide range of beneficial effects such as reduction in anxiety, better sleep, and improved cognition.

Am I a Candidate for Neurofeedback?

Autonomic Specialists use the eVox system for both diagnostic evaluation and neurofeedback treatment. It can be used for patients of all ages. The eVox assessment includes qEEG evaluation as critical component. Quantitative EEG is a significant advance in the analysis of brain function. It forms the basis of a new form of neurofeedback called LORETA Z score training. The eVox assessment can play a critical role in the evaluation of symptoms of brain dysfunction.  Feel free to contact us if you would like to know if an eVox assessment might be appropriate for you.

What Happens During A Neurofeedback Session?

Neurofeedback is localized to the brain. Unlike a drug it has no systemic effect. This can be particularly helpful for those with chronic illness that  is associated with intolerances to medication. During the training, a patient will wear what is known as an EEG cap, which is a lot like the caps swimmers sometimes wear. The EEG cap allows the eVox system to read your brain waves, and the eVox computer then processes your brain waves, displaying them on a screen.

During the session, you watch the monitor. When the computer recognizes a “positive” change in your brain waves, you are rewarded, and the positive brainwave pattern is reinforced.
Neurofeedback sessions can lead to a gradual and lasting change in brainwave activity. This in turn may help improve memory, enhance cognitive function, and lower stress.
