Transcranial Stimulation

At Autonomic Specialists we attempt to treat the entire human being. Dysautonomia is often associated with other debilitating conditions including anxiety, depression, sleep disturbances, and pain. For many patients, intolerance to medication precludes the use of prescription pain medications, antidepressants or anti-anxiety medications; other patients simply may not benefit from medication. Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and Transcranial Alpha Stimulation (Alpha-Stim) are two promising new FDA approved treatments that can address these problems.

What is Transcranial Stimulation?

transcranial magnetic stimulation

Transcranial stimulation is a non-invasive therapy aimed at altering brain function using electromagnetic (TMS) or electric (Alpha-Stim) energy. In patients with depression, anxiety, pain or insomnia, underactive area of the brain can be stimulated.

The most common side effect is pain or discomfort at or near the treatment site. These events are transient; they occur during the TMS treatment course and do not occur for most patients after the first week of treatment. There is a rare risk of seizure associated with the use of NeuroStar TMS (<0.1% per patient).

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is an FDA approved for treatment of depression. It involves pulsing highly focused magnetic fields in order to alter brain function.

Transcranial Alpha Stimulation (Alpha-Stim)

Alpha-Stim is an FDA approved for treatment of pain, depression, anxiety and insomnia. Alpha-Stim utilizes electricity to alter brain function as opposed to electromagnetic energy (TMS). In patients with Fibromyalgia, which is thought to be a form of small fiber autonomic neuropathy, pain can be alleviated with transcranial stimulation.

Why We Use Transcranial Stimulation to Treat Dysautonomia Patients

Transcranial stimulation therapies allow us to treat dysautonomia and associated conditions without having to rely on medication. Whenever medication can be avoided, we believe the chance for patients to complete treatment increases. Transcranial stimulation therapies are safe and well tolerated by the vast majority of patients, reducing the risk of complications and side effects from medication.
